Waste management and re-cycling work commences at UNISA

Our waste management division has started providing waste management and recycling services at the UNISA Campus in Parow. Since the commencement of the contract in February, we have managed to reduce waste-to-landfill by 40.3%. This means that more waste is being recycled and re-used than is being transferred to landfill sites.

Going forward, we will also be converting garden waste to compost which can in turn be re-used in the campus’s gardens.

We welcome UNISA Parow Campus, and look forward to a long sustainability journey with them.

Should you require waste management and recycling services do get in touch with us on 021 418 4000 or mjkader@afriservsa.co.za.

We partner with Grand Foods Bakery on a separate-at-source pilot project

In our drive to play a more active role in our customers’ waste management journeys, we partnered with Grand Foods Bakery, the manufacturers of Dunkin’Donuts doughnuts in South Africa, in a pilot separate-waste-at-source programme. The initiative is a response to reduce overfilled landfill sites since separation-at-source eases the strain on our natural resources, contributes to our Green Economy, and creates jobs and business opportunities in the waste sector. During July, the pilot project facilitated the reduction of waste to landfill by 76%, thereby reinforcing Grand Foods Bakery’s commitment to doing business responsibly through their waste recycling initiatives in order that they may impact the environment in a positive way. Of the 2.03 Tonnes of waste that were recycled in July, only 0.72 Tonnes were sent to landfill. Our waste management and landscaping teams participated at a National Water Week event at GrandWest by assisting with the clean-up of the Elsies River Canal which runs alongside the entertainment complex. Our business is dependent on the use of water, we therefore take water conservation very seriously, and do all we can to ensure that a water-saving culture is promoted as part of everything we do.

AFRI-PROFILE – Michael Thomas

We will be profiling one of our team members in every issue of AfriServ News. This month’s spotlight is on MICHAEL THOMAS, our Waste Site Manager at GrandWest Casino and Entertainment World

“I am Michael Thomas.

To start off I need to say I am a humorous person and I enjoy being around people, I love to talk and joke, and this is how my colleagues at AfriServ know me. I enjoy listening to Jazz or old school music when chilling at home, and I love gardening as it helps to de- stress. My favourite pastime is a long walk on the beach early on a Saturday morning.

The knowledge that my colleagues’ delivery in their respective roles is dependent on how I deliver in my role at AfriServ as their manager, is what gets me out of bed in the morning. I value the relationship I have with my team members, and we are passionate about working for AfriServ.

If I had a chance to change one thing in this world, it would be to ensure that there is justice for all!

I am the Site Manager in the waste area at the GrandWest Casino and Entertainment World on behalf of Afriserv and am very proud of my role within the company. Working at AfriServ means a great deal to me; I want to make the company proud, to help AfriServ grow into a world class organisation, and for people out there to know that I work for such a dynamic company.”

Our cleaning manager has managed to secure an expo stand for AfriServ at the Facilities’ Management (FM) Expo which was held in Cape Town on 18 October.  We managed to establish and re-establish a few good industry connections at this event, and look forward to FM Expo 2018!  Thank you to our partners, Caturra Coffee, who collaborated with us on the day by providing great coffee to people who visited our space.

We’re on a journey with our client, GrandWest Casino and Entertainment World, to ensure that they manage their waste in a responsible and sustainable way. They have recently undergone a waste management compliance audit of their complex and facilities, and we are pleased to report that the auditors have awarded them 100% compliance! Well done and congratulations GrandWest!
