Water-saving has to be integrated into how we do business

At Afrilandscapes we have had to apply novel watering solutions to continue to keep our clients’ landscaped gardens in pristine condition during the long droughts which beset Cape Town and the Western Cape in recent months. We have built water-wise practices into all landscaping projects which we manage, from drip irrigation systems, to grey water use, to trapping rain water in tanks for future use. No place is immune to drought, so we also prepare for such an eventuality by designing and implementing gardens which are resilient to dry conditions, and importantly, to integrate water-saving into how we do business. This beautifully landscaped residential garden was completed in Llundudno earlier this month. Afrilandscapes will also be responsible for the ongoing maintenance of this picturesque space, and will be using grey water to ensure that the grounds remain green and lush. The rooftop at The Onyx Apartments in Cape Town’s CBD gets a green makeover

Rooftop garden construction is an international trend which is catching on rapidly in South Africa too. We have done a few in and around the Waterfront, and are currently working on the rooftop of The Onyx Apartments in the Cape Town CBD. We’ve hand-selected rocks from the Contermanskloof Quarry which will serve as features in the plant beds, and can’t wait to see the landscape design come to life at The Onyx! A few of our other completed projects over the last month Planting/implementation work of a pedestrian walkway between the EMS and Life Science buildings at the University of the Western Cape. This was previously a roadway, which has now been closed off to vehicular traffic. With the good rains we enjoyed over the last few months, residents are keen on reviving their gardens for the Summer season again. Here are two gardens we have been contracted to plant and maintain in Hermanus and Llundudno. If you require professional landscaping services, do get in touch with Tony Krammer on 021 418-4000 or... read more

We have landscaped a development for the Rabie Property Group in Burgundy Estate, called Springfield. Springfield is a 40 unit housing complex. Landscape architect work was done by Donovan Gillman of Urban Choreography, which designed the Jungle Gym as a statement feature of the project, while AfriLandscapes was contracted to procure all materials – such as raw cut gum posts – from various suppliers; we were also responsible for assembling this distinctive item on site. A unique aspect of this project is the fact that the garden is connected to a treated effluent water supply, so only grey water is used for irrigation, which is a very innovative solution. The project is in its final stages of maintenance to establish the garden and is anticipated to be completed by shortly. For advice on water-wise garden design, implementation, and maintenance, please contact Julian Bartels on julian@afrilandscapes.co.za or 071 567 9775... read more

Our landscaping design and ongoing maintenance work at the V&A Waterfront’s Silo District has been submitted for consideration for a SALI (South African Landscapers’ Institute) 2018 Award. We are extremely proud of what we have managed to achieve in this space, particularly amidst severe drought conditions, and very stringent water restrictions. We continue to enjoy a great working relationship with the Waterfront’s management team as we continue to provide ongoing landscaping maintenance in the Silo District and other pockets of the V&A Waterfront... read more

The Cape Town drought, accompanied by hot and dry weather, affects our local gardens far more negatively than we realise. The effects of drought on our gardens can last for many years, impacting most harshly on trees and large shrubs. While we have no control over when rain falls, and when not, we can attempt in some way to minimise its effects on our plant life.

Rooftop gardens in urban environments have become ever more popular in South Africa.  We’re finding this phenomenon to be true as a number of our greening projects, particularly in the V&A Waterfront and the Cape Town CBD, involve landscaping the rooftops of office buildings.  Apart from the obvious decorative benefits, rooftop plants can enhance temperature control and provide recreational facilities for office workers, amongst others.              If you require professional advice regarding your rooftop garden, or any other forms of landscaping, do get in touch with us on 021 418 4000 or... read more
